Review of Mint- (bookkeeping program for personal finance)
by Taj Moore (Denver Abundance League)
While we have been recommending and also
training
on Quicken and
Quickbooks for years, we are always looking
for the best accounting programs for all of
you to be using to assist you on your
financial awareness journey.
Mint arrived on our radar screen a few years
ago and here is what Taj, our client-now
colleague, says about the program:
"Happy to give thoughts. Mint makes it
easy to
get everything at a glance, much more so than
Quicken for Mac. With Quicken, you have to
push buttons to retrieve data-with Mint you
simply login and it grabs everything right
then. There's also an iphone app for it.
Mint lets you nickname payees, assign
categories, and will give you some budget
info (and graphs I think) based on your
categories; it also compares different months
to the most recent to give you a heads up on
spending changes. I have found that one
rather lackluster; since I haven't done much
with categories, it doesn't know what's what
as well and therefore doesn't provide the
clearest picture of spending comparisons.
Mint will email you with bill reminders, and
the occasional alert about unusual activity.
Mint also will help you find better deals on
credit cards and perhaps other loans-this may
be in concert with partner companies,
although I think maybe it's unfiltered.
Another thing Mint has in a social network of
people giving advice to each other and
chatting about financial concerns. I haven't
participated much, but I understand it's
fairly active.
All in all, Mint is very useful for personal
tracking. It's free, customizable, and easy
to use. Once you enter a financial
institution, it's in there. Once you want to
get a little more complicated, you'd be
better off with something more robust (like
Quicken).
I'm probably going to get the latest version
of Quicken for the Mac when it comes out this
summer. I've got business expenses from time
to time that I need to keep track of.
Meanwhile, Mint is a handy site."
